Contact Improvisation (CI) Jams

Contact Improvisation is a dance form based on physical listening, touch, weight-sharing, gravity and spontaneous composition. It offers a space to explore movement, communication and creativity through embodied interaction.

Welcome to the Autumn 2026 season of Weekly Contact Improvisation Jams at Keltainen Talo!
Organized in collaboration with Joensuu in Contact Festival, these classes and jams are facilitated by local Contact Improvisation practitioners.

These gatherings are open to movers of all backgrounds: dancers and non-dancers, beginners and experienced practitioners alike. No previous experience in Contact Improvisation is required unless otherwise stated.

What is Contact Improvisation?

There is no fixed choreography to learn. Instead, participants are invited to listen through their bodies, respond to weight and momentum and discover movement together with others.

You can participate at your own pace and according to your own physical capacity. Resting, observing or modifying movement are always welcome parts of the practice.

Group’s principles

Please see these principles on accessibility and inclusivity:

  • All bodies, genders, ages and cultural backgrounds are welcome.
  • No expectation of a specific body type, ability or dance aesthetic.
  • Touch is an integral part of Contact Improvisation and always based on mutual consent.
  • You are encouraged to communicate your boundaries verbally or non-verbally.
  • You may step in and out of dancing, rest or observe at any time.
  • The space aims to be respectful, non-judgmental and supportive.

Näin valmistaudut kokoontumisiin

Contact Improvisation is a dance form practiced in close physical contact. Therefore it is important to care for shared space and bodies. To support safety, comfort and care for everyone, participants are kindly asked to:

  • arrive with clean clothes and a clean body
  • keep fingernails and toenails trimmed
  • avoid strong perfumes or scents

These small gestures help create a space where touch can be attentive, safe and enjoyable for all.
